The Red Cow
Petr Penrethman issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Red Cow, in New Queen Street (now Queen Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2320A; Obv inscription: PETER. PENRETHMAN. AT. YE. RED (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HALF / PENY / P.P.I. (in three lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom); Rev inscription: COW. IN. NEW. QUEENE. STREETE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = a cow (in field).
The token must have been issued after the Great Fire of London, in 1666, as it was only at this time that the street was built, see Henry A. Harben, A Dictionary of London (London, 1918). New Queen Street, now Queen Street, runs south off Cheapside, in Vintry Ward, Cheap Ward and Cordwainer Ward, in the City of London.
