The Plaisterers' Arms
William Hebb issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Ivy Lane (area off Paternoster Row).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1556; Obv inscription: WILLIAM.HEBB.IN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Plasterers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: IVEY.LANE.1664 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = W.I.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Plasterers are: Azure on a cheveron argent on a rose gules budded, or stalked and leaved vert, between two fleurs de lys azure; in chief a trowel fessewise between two plasterer's hammers palewise all argent handled or, in base a plasterer's brush of four knots tied argent handled (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by HeatherChild...(London, 1960). Ivy Lane ran north from Paternoster Row, towards Aldgate street, lying within the ward of Farringdon Within, in the City of London; it now lies in Bread Street Ward.
