Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Patten
An adult size left foot cork and leather soled patten or slip-on shoe. The sole is of cork with all surfaces originally covered with leather. The toe is very pointed and the whole sole is extremely narrow. The sole has worn through at the tread. The sole is tunnel stitched to the leather side edging, which was then stitched from the grain surface to the insole (which is now gone). Fragments of the cork sole survive inside the leather covering.
