The Pewterers' Arms
Robert Bristow, a cheesemonger, issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at Wapping Wall, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3281; Obv inscription: ROBT.BRISTOW.CHESMVNGR (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Pewterers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: AT.WAPING.WALL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.M.B. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers are: Azure on a chevron between three strikes argent, as many roses, stalked, budded and leaved vert (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Wapping Wall runs north-east of Garnet Street, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, it was previously part of Stepney, Middlesex.
