The Pestle and Mortar
Grace Pestell issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for her business in Fig Tree Yard, Ratcliffe, Middlesex. The depicition of a pestle is a play on the issuers name.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2359; Obv inscription: GRACE.PESTELL.IN.FIGG (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mortar and pestle and G.P (in field, in Roman capitals); Rev inscription: TREE.YARD.IN.RATCLIFFE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HER / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Ratcliffe is a disctrict in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Middlesex.
