The Castle Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Castle tavern, in Paternoster Row.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2188; Obv inscription: THE.CASTELL.TAVERN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A castle (in field); Rev inscription: IN.PATERNOSTER.ROE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.D.B. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).

The issuer is known to have beeen 'John Broughton, vintner, mentioned in the accounts of St Michael le Querne' (Kenneth Rogers, 'On some issuers of seventeenth-century London tokens whose names were not known to Boyne and WIlliamson', NC, 5th series 8 (1928), p.88), as cited in token number 7459a in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. Paternoster Row lies in the ward of Farringdon Within, and Castle Baynard Ward, in the City of London.
