The Prince of Wales Feathers
Michael Woolrich issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the Feathers tavern, in Lothbury.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1840; Obv inscription: MICHAEL.WOLRICH (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Prince of Wales feathers (in field); Rev inscription: IN.LOATHBVRY.1656 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = M.W (in field, in Roman capitals).
The issuer was Michael Woolrich, a cook. A decree was produced in 1668 that stated that 'M. Woolrich, cook, should rebuild the messuage leased to John Woolrich 1656' (Fire Court: Calendar to the Judgments and Decress of the Court of Judicature appointed to determine Differences between Landlords and Tenants as to rebuilding after the Great Fire, ed. Philip E. Jones (London,1966-, i. 275).
