The Castle Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Castle tavern, at Fleet Conduit.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1076; Obv inscription: AT.THE.CASTLE.TAVERN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A castle (in field); Rev inscription: AT.FLEET.CONDVIT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = D.S.G. (triad of initials, in Roman capitals, in field).
Fleet Conduit lay at the south end of Shoe Lane, in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London, to provide water for the area; it was destroyed in the Great Fire, 1666.
